A Leading Vein Doctor Explains What to Expect after EVLT treatment

endovenous-laser-ablationAfter a professional venous health screening at a reputable varicose vein center, you may be recommended endovenous laser treatment (EVLT treatment) by a laser expert. What is this procedure like, and what can you expect in terms of recovery and results?

What do patients in New Hyde Park, NY, need to know about EVLT treatment?

The goal of most modern vein disease treatment techniques, including EVLT, is to close off and seal the diseased vein permanently. The body gradually reabsorbs the old vein and reroutes blood through healthier veins in the area. These procedures are effective at both restoring good circulation and significantly improving the appearance of vein disease.

Endovenous laser treatment is a relatively new procedure that closes the great saphenous vein from the inside, without having to physically remove it like they used to do with vein stripping. With EVLT, the vein is closed and left in its place, and the body then reroutes the blood through healthier veins nearby. To accomplish this, Dr. Julius Garvey of Garvey Vascular Specialists in New Hyde Park, NY, uses the heat from a precisely aimed laser beam to seal off the diseased vein. A very thin probe is inserted through a tiny incision in the skin to deliver the heat energy to the vein. Ultrasound technology is used to guide the probe to the exact location of the diseased vein, which means no further discomfort to you. EVLT is thus minimally invasive and can be used to treat deeper veins than can be seen on the surface of the skin.

What should I expect after EVLT?

The EVLT procedure itself will be performed conveniently in our New Hyde Park, New York offices, with no need to visit a hospital or have a lengthy recovery time. This varicose vein treatment takes about an hour. However, due to standard pre- and post-treatment procedures, you may need to spend up to 2 hours with us that day.

Because EVLT is performed through one tiny incision in the skin, you can expect minimal to no scarring at all. After a brief rest, you’ll be up and around and can resume your normal activities. Your varicose vein doctor will probably recommend you wear compression stockings for two weeks or so after the procedure, to help ensure the closed vein stays closed and to encourage the body to quickly reroute the blood. Regular walking is also highly recommended, in order to stimulate improved circulation.

Are the results of EVLT permanent?

Yes, the results from EVLT are permanent, and the veins will not reopen or reappear once sealed with the procedure. However, there is no guarantee that you will not develop new varicose veins in the future, especially if you are a member of a high-risk group for vein disease. Those at increased risk include older females (over age 50), and those with a family history of vein disease. Overweight and obese people are also at increased risk of developing vein disease, because extra weight puts extra stress on your circulatory system. Your vein specialist may recommend a combination of conservative strategies, such as the use of compression stockings regularly, losing weight, and maintaining a regular exercise program in order to help prevent the appearance of new varicose veins and spider veins.
